What color wires go where on a Honeywell thermostat? ›

Thermostat Wiring Tips

If your thermostat controls your heat, you will have a white wire. The Y wire is yellow and connects to your air conditioning compressor. The G wire is green and connects to the fan. Rc and Rh: The red wire(s) are the power source for your thermostat.

Attach the red wire to the R terminal (Call for heating and/or cooling). Attach the green wire to the G terminal (Fan). Attach the white wire to the W terminal (Heat). Attach the yellow wire to the Y terminal (AC).

Rc is different from R (or Rw occassionally) in the it allows the cooling to run on a dfferent power source. Power comes in at R and out at G to run the fan, W for the heat, etc. There is only a C if the stat itself needs it to power itself. You jumper R and Rc to make the power into Rc the same as R.

If you put wires into the wrong thermostat connectors during setup can, this can cause your system to malfunction or possibly damage it.

C wires, whether blue or other color, may apply to every thermostat, but blue C wires are primarily used for thermostats that are attached to a heat pump. This wire connects to terminal B on your thermostat.

A C-wire, or a common wire, runs from your low-voltage heating system (24v) and carries continuous power to your thermostat. In today's electric market, most newer heating and cooling systems have C-wires, which guarantees compatibility for the installation of all smart thermostats.

The orange wire runs from the thermostat to the heat pump. If your home doesn't have a heat pump, the thermostat either won't contain this wire color or may have it but won't use it.

In most cases, the R wire is connected to the RC terminal, and a separate wire (typically labeled "C" for common) is connected to the RH terminal to provide a common 24-volt connection.

If you have separate heating and air conditioning systems, you might have separate Rh and Rc wires that come out of the wall and are connected to your system. These are not jumper wires, and you can insert the Rc wire into the Rc connector and the Rh wire into the Rh connector.

If you have two wires, R or RH go into the R terminal and RC into the RC terminal. If you have more than one wire (for example, you have a wire labeled R and another wire labeled Rc), remove any jumpers between the R and Rc terminals or push the switch to open the RC terminal to insert a wire.

The K terminal located on the Honeywell thermostat combines the Y and G wires. It does this using the Honeywell wire saver. The Wyze system is not compatible with the Honeywell wire saver. However, your system will be compatible with the Wyze thermostat once the Honeywell wire saver is removed.

A 4-wire thermostat system typically consists of four wires: red (power), white (heat), yellow (cool), and green (fan). These wires allow for basic heating and cooling functions and are commonly found in older HVAC systems or simpler setups.

Light blue Y2 wire is used in 7-wire and 8-wire thermostats for second-stage cooling systems. Brown wire with W2 is used for second-stage heating systems. Brown wire with the letter E is used for emergency heat.

5 Thermostat Wire System

This configuration includes a 24-volt red wire for power, a white wire for the heating elements, a yellow wire for the AC unit, a green wire for the fan component, and a common wire which is most likely blue but could be a different color.

W/W1 and W2. In a conventional system, W/W1 controls your heating system and, where applicable, W2 controls your heating system's second stage, which helps warm the home faster. If you have a heat pump system with auxiliary heating, you'll normally connect the AUX/AUX1 or W2 wire to the ecobee's W1 terminal.
