Did you know?🤔So…there has been an uproar regarding this recent 🥊 fight at these current Olympic Games in 🇫🇷 with many commenting on unfairness of a female having more ‘biological’ male traits competing vs a female athlete! ⤵️https://lnkd.in/egdWCT4ULet’s first look at the science…The quoted ‘162% difference’ between males & females was not tested in 🥊 or any combat sport but rather non-athletes https://lnkd.in/eG95FVFcSo males exhibited more strength in a ‘cranking’ action = ⬆️shoulder flexors + elbow extensors…but does it translate to 🥊? 🧐So what about 🥊? This study actually shows that males ‘typically’ had a higher impulse (more severe punches) than females…however there was an overlap meaning that individual punching performance could not be based ‘solely’ on gender https://lnkd.in/e7aCUP8UWell…Here this study actually showed that in boxers, males had a higher force & reaction ⏰ with the rear hand (strongest shot in 🥊) than females! 😳https://lnkd.in/eKAfKq8gSo it is fair to say studies show physical superiority of males vs females…in punching power 💥🤛What’s my take? 👀Having been around elite Olympic boxers for >15yrs I can defo say that matched by weight males do have superior punching power advantage & hence why more care is required towards intergender sparring…let alone competition! 🥊 is no darts or archery! So for me any decisions made regarding participation of athletes in a sport like 🥊 should be firstly based on safety. Was the inclusion of this athlete based on safety for others?…suppose the jury is out 🤷🏻♂️#SafetyFirst #Olympics #Boxing

I think there is a lot more depth to this that you and others missing, Ian. Plenty of scaremongering and misinformation not helping this already difficult situation. I too am absolutely on the side of safety but the nuanced facts and wider picture don’t support the reductionist view being disseminated. The simple version is easy to spread because humans want a simple black and white answer and these can be portrayed in a snapshot on social media…. But as in all good science AND in sport, it’s not that simple…

It is unfair on both athletes that the governing and regulatory bodies have failed them so obviously in this instance. The Caster Semenya case should have helped them learn various difficult lessons, especially with what Caster has been through.Sex based performance differences matter across the board but in contact sports, the risks are amplified.

I am shameless, a huge Olympics fan, every 2 years, winter or summer! But did you see Team USA women’s track and field uniforms for the Olympics last week? When we ask young people and athletes to do incredible things with their bodies in sports, we must ensure they feel comfortable and confident. One of the most critical aspects of this is what they wear. Unlike the men’s uniforms, which include a compression tank and mid-thigh shorts, the women’s uniform is a noticeably high-cut bikini bottom. Uniforms should be a service to performance. Women should be able to compete without worrying about the mental space of having every vulnerable price of their bodies on display, not to mention minimal coverage and light color for those who might be menstruating. #menstruatingathlete Shout out to New Zealand! New Zealand has changed gymnastics rules to allow shorts or tights with leotards, allowing all athletes to choose and wear what makes them feel comfortable and confident.Small changes to uniforms could make a big difference in how females, especially young female athletes, feel about their bodies.Around the world, 45% of teen girls are dropping out of sports (that is 2x the rate of boys), largely due to body confidence! What are your thoughts on Paris 2024 uniforms for the track and field women of Team USA?#sportspharmacy #sportsmedicine #sportperformance #paris2024athletes #pharmacy #athletes #teamusa #womeninsport

At the UKSCA we’re proud to support the UK Anti-Doping's "Protect Your Sport" campaign. Clean sport depends on everyone having the know-how to speak out when something’s wrong. As we all look forward to watching Team GB and Paralympics GB perform in Paris24, the hard work that athletes put in behind the scenes on their journey to the podium should never be underestimated. UKAD have worked with the BOA and BPA to ensure all athletes and support staff are prepared to represent the country with Passion, Respect, Integrity, Determination whilst also Enjoying the whole experience. Jane Rumble, Chief Executive at UKAD, recently said: “Clean athletes work tirelessly to reach the very top of their sport. Doping in any form, whether it’s from a competitor, a teammate, or by an individual inadvertently, takes away that podium moment for some and the hard work of many involved, wasting hours of professional support given by coaches, physios, doctors and nutritionists, among other athlete support personnel. It is essential for the integrity of sport to create a clean culture, and to establish an environment that prioritises the health and welfare of athletes".Follow the link below to read how one coach demonstrated their core values when they chose to report doping concerns - they have shared insight into why they chose to report potential doping in their sport.https://ow.ly/mUOz50Sz03y#ukad #whereabouts #conditioningcoach #strengthconditioning #strengthandconditioning #strengthcoach #WADA #TeamGB #ParalympicsGB #Paris24 World Anti-Doping Agency Your Guardian Ltd Claire Lane

Managing the student-athlete in hot environments presents challenges for athletic programs. A recent publication elevates the need to manage athletes [Anderson SA, Eichner ER, Bennett S, et al. Preventing Exertional Heat Stroke in Football: Time for a Paradigm Shift. Sports Health. 2024;0(0). doi:10.1177/19417381241260045] . Here at Butler our process includes individual sweat testing (Precision Hydration) which provides sweat rate and sweat content. Then education and an individual prescription each athlete has a tailored guide to meet their hydration needs. Further work is done by adding Inflow Generation 2 urine feedback devices to urinals. Below is our chart placed in lockers for each athlete. #hydration #sportsbusiness #athlete #soccer #ncaa #football #volleyball #sportsmedicine #strength #fitness

Sports Performance: Maximising Athletic Potential within the GymUnderstanding key joint actions in sports is crucial for enhancing athletic performance and preventing injuries. Joint actions such as flexion (bending), extension (straightening), abduction (moving away from the body), adduction (moving towards the body) and rotation (turning) play vital roles in executing movements. Strengthening muscles involved in these actions through tailored training programs improves strength, flexibility and agility, leading to better athletic and sporting performance. In our latest blog article, we delve into the pivotal sports within Australia, namely Soccer, Cricket, Tennis, AFL, Golf, and Basketball, analysing how gym and strength training can elevate performance. We explore the concept of 'agonist' muscles, which are the primary drivers of specific movements or actions. In the context of sports, these muscles are responsible for generating force and facilitating movement during gameplay. Enjoying a little @chilipeppers as the @olympics #closingceremony wraps up… and couldn’t help but wonder… and maybe there’s a completely reasonable explanation for this, but… why do we have a separate @paralympics ? Is #blindfootball or being in awe of a person weighing 100# throwing up triple their weight any less amazing than breakdancing or non para-badminton? Both games are in Paris, but only one will dominate tv for 2 weeks, only one will be talked about around the water cooler, etc.. and I’ve not yet gotten into how fewer global sponsors, how much less star power stays on for the @paralympics - I’m guessing James, Phelps, etc won’t be making it back to see the para version of the sport that made them heroes… or opportunities for athletes with disabilities to get endorsement deals… hell, the first Paralympic athlete to get on the cover of a @wheatiescereal box was 2018! Over 25% of us have have a disability… yet the separation between “the disabled” and the rest of the world seems to be as strong as ever. The IOC chair praises inclusion, yet there is an entire subgroup of people that, in my opinion, are relegated to the annex of the Olympics… the kids table at turkey dinner… I say extend the Olympics another week, merge the events that you can (ie Men’s, Women’s, Men’s para, Women’s para… do we even need a different para archery event?), and be amazed at what the human spirit can achieve, despite the odds, the criticism, the nos or not having the body mechanics seemingly built for a chosen sport. #disabilityisnotinability @jenarnoldmd #fightthegoodfight #evenstevenolympics2028

What a wonderful moment. For me, this photo captures a real sense that competition, rivalry, contest, winning, and a sense of 'the opposition' can all comfortably co-exist with fraternity, respect, good grace, and recognition of achievement. Magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat is a phrase I love and will try to follow.
