The Light Adjustable Lens by RxSight Cataract Surgery

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) by RxSight is the first and only lens that can be adjusted and customized after surgery. During surgery, your natural lens is still replaced with an artificial lens, but after surgery, we can adjust the lens to fine-tune your vision based on your preferences.

The adjustable lens can be adjusted through the Light Delivery Device, which uses UV light to reshape the lens to your specific vision needs.

How Does the Light Adjustable Lens by RxSight Work?

The LAL is made of a special material that responds to ultraviolet (UV) light. After your cataract surgery, we can use a gentle Light Delivery Device (LDD) to adjust the shape and power of the LAL lens within your eye. This painless procedure allows us to optimize your vision for near, intermediate, and distance viewing, helping reduce your dependence on glasses.

Is the Light Adjustable Lens by RxSight Right for You?

Traditionally, cataract patients undergo extensive pre-operative testing to determine the prescription (or power) of their new non-adjustable intraocular lens. However, pre-op testing cannot fully anticipate small shifts occurring during the healing process. Being able to adjust the lens’ power after healing is complete gives surgeons and patients the opportunity for clearer, more precise vision. The LAL removes the guesswork from cataract surgery.

The LAL is also frequently recommended for patients who have corneal abnormalities such as prior corneal surgery, conditions such as keratoconus or those with a long history of dry eye disease where there are limitations on the absolute accuracy of traditional pre-op testing.

Benefits of the Light Adjustable Lens by RxSight

Some benefits of the Light Adjustable Lens by RxSight include:

  • Enhanced vision: The LAL offers the potential for sharper, clearer vision across a wider range of distances compared to traditional IOLs
  • Reduced dependence on glasses: Many patients who receive the LAL experience a significant reduction in their need for glasses for everyday activities
  • Personalized vision correction: The ability to fine-tune the LAL after surgery allows us to create a customized vision solution that meets your unique needs
  • Safe and effective: The LAL has been FDA-approved and is backed by over 25 years of extensive clinical research

Cataract Management Solutions

Cataract surgery involves removing your eye’s natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) for clearer, crisper vision at specific distances.

Now, cataract patients have the option of using multifocal IOLs. A multifocal IOL combines simple lens replacement with vision correction, improving eyesight at multiple distances. Many patients who choose multifocal IOLs don’t have to wear glasses after their cataract surgery—over 90% according to some studies.

In fact, technology has advanced so much that certain IOLs can even correct astigmatism.

Monofocal Lenses

Monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are the most widely used implants for cataract surgery. They offer a simple yet effective solution to restore clear vision after cataract removal. These lenses provide enhanced focusing for a chosen distance, near or far.

Cherry Creek Eye offers the innovative Light Adjustable Lens by RxSight. This unique monofocal IOL allows for fine-tuning after surgery, allowing patients the opportunity for clearer, more precise vision.

Toric Lenses

Toric IOLs help correct astigmatism. These lenses help correct the corneal abnormality that causes blurry vision in astigmatism, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for glasses after surgery. We offer multiple toric lens options, including the TECNIS Eyhance Toric IOL and the Clareon Toric IOL.

Multifocal Lenses

Multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) offer a potential solution for patients seeking a wider range of clear vision after cataract surgery. These lenses aim to provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances.

Your multifocal implant options include the TECNIS Synergy IOL and the Clareon PanOptix Trifocal IOL.

EDOF Lenses

Extended depth-of-focus IOLs are a newer technology that create a continuous zone of improved focus, resulting in clearer vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. They replace cataracts and correct presbyopia. Cherry Creek Eye offers the Clareon Vivity Extended Vision IOL, the TECNIS Symfony IOL, and the enVista Aspire IOL.

Before & After Cataract Surgery

To prepare for your surgery and recovery, we recommend you follow these before and after tips. If you have any questions about these recommendations, please contact our practice. We would be happy to answer them.

Before Surgery

At home and before your surgery, we recommend that you:

  • Arrange transportation for the day of surgery and your first-day post-operative appointment.
  • Make sure all financial arrangements and insurance questions have been resolved before your surgery date.
  • Do not eat for 8 hours before surgery. Take all your regular medications with sips of water (no juice or coffee). For medications to lower blood sugar, including insulin, consult your doctor for the proper dose. This usually means taking half of your usual insulin dose because you will have fasted for 8 hours.
  • Start using the prescribed eye drops 1 day before surgery with 5 minutes between drops.
  • Wear comfortable clothing with a top that buttons or zips down the front. Please do not wear jewelry or makeup.
  • Bring your photo ID and your insurance information with you to the surgery center.

Immediately After Surgery

Following your surgery, we recommend that you:

  • Go home and rest.
  • Resume most of your usual activities—walking, watching TV, reading, and going out to dinner are fine.
  • Wear either glasses or a protective shield at all times. Wear the shield at night for protection.
  • Resume taking your regular medications, and take prescribed eye drops for about 4 hours after your procedure.
  • You may use Tylenol, Aspirin, Advil or Aleve for mild irritation or discomfort. Applying something cold to the area in the form of ice in a zip-lock bag or a light bag of frozen vegetables can also help with discomfort.
  • You may bathe, but make sure you keep the operative eye closed. Your eyelids may be gently cleansed with a clean, moistened washcloth or cotton balls. Avoid rubbing the affected eye.
  • Please do not drink alcohol, drive a car, or go back to work on the same day as your procedure.
  • Avoid lifting anything over about 40 pounds, and avoid any sustained head-down postures (such as yoga poses like downward dog).
  • Do not go into hot tubs or swimming pools for 2 weeks following your procedure.

Starting 1 Day After Surgery

Starting 1 day after surgery:

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes.
  • Avoid wearing eye makeup for 1 week.
  • Wear a protective eye shield to sleep for 3 nights (not days) following your procedure.
  • Sunglasses are optional but are highly recommended as your eyes may be sensitive to light for about a week.
  • Showering and shampooing should be done with care not to splash water into the affected eye.
  • Avoid rigorous exercise. Mild to moderate exercise such as jogging, road biking, golf, or elliptical workouts are fine. Highly strenuous activities such as mountain biking, yoga, or mogul skiing should be avoided for 1 week. Full activity (except for swimming and hot tubs) may be resumed after 1 week.
  • Attend your post-operative appointments. Usually, the post-operative appointment schedule consists of 3 visits:
    • Appointment #1: The day following surgery
    • Appointment #2: 3–4 weeks following surgery
    • Appointment #3: 3 months following surgery
